Eligible Artists: Virginia residents 18 years or older

Eligible Works:
        2D - watercolor, oil, acrylic, drawing, mixed media and printmaking, fine art                   photography
        3D - clay and porcelain ceramics, sculpture in wood, metal, glass or mixed                                 sculpture, non-wearable fiber art

Entry Fees:  $30 for up to three entries
                    $20 for full time students

Judges - Mim Golub Scalin & Chuck Scalin
Mim Golub Scalin was born in Chicago, Illinois. She studied at the University of Illinois, NYU, and VCU. She taught in the Art Foundation Program at VCU for 18 years, and teaches courses occasionally at VMFA Studio School. She offers workshops to corporations and private groups. She began her artist life as a painter of large abstract expressionist paintings but over the years has created smaller and more minimalistic works, primarily working with found paper.

Currently, she is active in the International Union of Mail Artists, where she sends her work all over the world. She has been in exhibits worldwide, including Korea, Spain, France, Venezuela, Greece, and the U.S. The motto from The Alternative Speakers Bureau, which she is a part of, guides her artistic life: Creativity is a Practice.

Chuck Scalin, born in Chicago, is an artist and educator. He is currently a professor emeritus and former Assistant Chair of the Communication Art + Design Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. His education includes degrees from the 

School of the Art Institute in Chicago and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Chuck's  professional career spans over 45 years. His paintings, collage, photography, clay and glassworks have been included and received recognition in over 250 juried and invitational exhibitions with 25 solo exhibitions here and abroad.


His work is also in many public and private collections, including: VCU, Capital One, McGuire-Woods, Media General, Bank of Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Muscarelle Museum, and Bayley Museums.

In 2012, Chuck was awarded his 6th artist residency at the Cité International des Arts in Paris, France where he produced a body of photography work titled “Unsung View of Paris” that exhibited in Paris and Richmond. After retiring from teaching, he came out of retirement 10 years ago to teach courses and 

workshops in the Art of Collage and Assemblage at the Virginia Museum Studio School, where he is still teaching.
